Verviers

From soft gold to blue gold

At the heart of the Blue Ardennes, Verviers, Walloon Capital of Water, possesses an industrial past that closely links “soft gold” (wool) to “blue gold” (water). A long history which began a few centuries ago when the water quality of the Vesdre, combined with the know-how of the Verviers artisans, gave wool an unmatched feel.

This daughter of the Vesdre today possesses a modern status of “ville d’eau” (water town) thanks in particular to its new “Parcours des Fontaines” (Route of the Fountains). It is a sparkling and bubbly route for children and grownups!

But Verviers is also the many tourist attractions of which it is made up. The new Darcis Chocolate Museum will give you an authentic voyage through the history of chocolate, the Wool and Fashion Tourist Centre and the Maison de l’Eau (House of Water - Maison de Bonvoisin) form part of this tourism heritage, along with the Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum, the Archaeology and Folklore Museum, etc.

The town of Verviers, graced with a cultural heritage that is worthy of interest, now presents a new dynamic and attractive face. The public is continuously attracted by the Spirit of 66 concerts, the shows put on in its Grand Théâtre and in the Espace Duesberg, and the many festive events that liven up the town centre and its surroundings (FiestaCity, Les Chocolateries, Film, Water, Whisky and Jazz Festivals, the Big Easter Monday Flea Market, etc.). Tourists and local residents will be equally surprised by the number of public figures that have always been linked to the Wool- Producing Town: from the Taloche brothers to Steve Houben, by way of Henri Vieuxtemps, Guillaume Lekeu, René Hausman, Jean Vallée and Pierre Rapsat and others; what a fine international image for Verviers!

Verviers has succeeded in becoming a “town in the countryside” perfectly integrating wooded parks, pedestrian riverbanks, walks and cycle routes, businesses and restaurants.

There are many reasons why Verviers is worth taking your time over!
