The Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics houses

The Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Céramique, founded by Jean-Simon Renier in 1884 in the former "Hôpital nouveau" (1661), boasts one of Belgium's finest collections of ceramics in terms of the number, quality and diversity of its pieces. Various "Chine de commande" and "Compagnie des Indes" pieces were imported into Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, before the invention of the first European hard porcelains in Meissen (Saxony). Underground earthenware and stoneware are well represented, with blue Delft (vases and dishes of all sizes) and polychrome Delft (jugs, animals and flowers). To complete this artistic journey, visitors are plunged into a different atmosphere, that of European and contemporary paintings.

Destroyed by the floods of 15 July 2021, the Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Céramique had to close to the public. After more than two years of closure and months of work, the Museum reopened its doors on 24 January 2024 in a new Museum in transition! The collections will be rediscovered in a brand new scenography. Admire one of the largest and most interesting collections of ceramics in Belgium and discover a sample of sculptures, engravings, lace, old European paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries, modern and contemporary paintings, etc.
