Letters from Verviers (1933–2026) – Freddy Joris

€24,00

This 480-page volume provides as comprehensive an account as possible of the history of authors from Verviers or of Verviers origin (including Dison, of course), writing in French or Walloon and across all literary genres, from the first book by a local author in 1633 up to and including June 2026. The work also covers printers (from 1737 onwards), publishers (including Marabout in the 20th century), booksellers and libraries, as well as the reading public, of course, and places the development of all these players within the economic and social context of each era. It thus explores nearly four hundred years of regional cultural history, which is sometimes little known as it has often been obscured by the ‘veil of silence’ hanging over the city’s past.

The Letters of Verviers (1933–2026). This new volume by historian Freddy Joris is the result of more than three years of research and writing, with the active support of Jean-Marie Klinkenberg, Professor Emeritus at the University of Liège and a member of the Academy.

The history of Verviers is often summarised in terms of its textile heritage and, in cultural terms, its musical tradition. Yet the town has also been the centre of intense activity in the fields of literature and publishing, from the first book by a Verviers native published in 1633 right through to André Blavier and the Marabout publishing house in the 20th century – a tradition that continues to this day. This book is dedicated to the history of literature in Verviers. Discover the stories of the authors, as well as the printers, publishers, booksellers and libraries, and also the reading public.
