Topo-Guide GR573 “Vesdre et Hautes Fagnes”

Vesdre and High Fens: a land of contrasts, a region of rivers

Almost entirely within the Vesdre basin, the GR 573 respects an indisputable geographical consistency. However, the journey is extremely varied and all the more interesting for that. The rivers are omnipresent.

As you start along the Vesdre, just outside Liège, the route will wind its way through two very different regions. On the northern bank, the Pays de Herve, a fertile, rural and pleasant region. To the south, the wild and bewitching Ardennes. Between them, small towns, a few cities: Pepinster, Verviers, Eupen…

After Eupen, going up the Helle, the GR enters the Ardennes of the forests and then leads to the High Fens with its desolate moors. Then, it follows the Hoëgne in the middle of the peat bogs. Very forested until Polleur, the route then enters the region of Theux, where, in a new contrast, the landscapes become softer and clearer. The last few kilometres towards Pepinster take on a wilder tone.

A second itinerary, from Pepinster to Belleheid, passing over the heights of Spa, renews this game of successions of soils and discoveries where rivers, streams, tourist towns, deep forests and historical monuments alternate.
