Limbourg: family walk
The Yellow Diamond Walk is an ideal family walk. It takes you along easy paths, surrounded by vast meadows, to meet the rural world of today. Start at the foot of the Sainte-Anne chapel, built in the 16th century, at a place called Halloux.
The rural world of our regions has undergone changes that are reflected in the villages of today. From the 16th century onwards, the farms were dispersed and livestock farming became more important. The meadows enclosed by hedges contained the livestock. The grassland bocage was established throughout the region. From the 18th century onwards, thatch and wooden buildings gave way to more durable materials such as stone and brick. Built in two parallel structures, the farms, which in the past consisted of a dwelling, a stable and a dairy, have now often been converted into private homes.
Magnificent examples of this rural heritage await you during your walk, including the Grande Halloux farm with its porch and private courtyard, the Goronnes farm on the edge of the Hèvremont road, the old Colinet bakery with its small Halleur pot or, at the end of your route, the Petite Halloux farm decorated with a stone engraved with a chronogram.

Limbourg: 'Once upon a time in Bilstain'
Bilstain, whose name means "protruding rock", together with the Ru de Bilstain wood, formed the landed seigneury of the Abbey of Saint-Jacques until the end of the Ancien Régime. Divided between various hamlets, the territory is geographically divided into an upper and a lower part linked by the Saint-Jacques wood. In the heart of this old village reigns the serene atmosphere of the rural villages of yesteryear and in which lies, in the centre of the cemetery, the massive sandstone tower of the Saint-Roch church.
The natural riches of the Pays de Herve bocage are spread out in vast meadows where grasses, clover and dandelions grow in abundance, nonchalantly ruminated by carefree cows. Continuing towards the woods, the path takes you past the Enduro estate. Then join the calm waters of the stream and the rocks of the Nez de Napoleon, which offer breathtaking views over the Lonhian countryside.
Cross the bridge over the Vesdre and join the railway, leaving behind the huge building of the former preventorium. At the edge of Rue Sur les Sarts is an example of an 18th century farmhouse with charming wooden flower boxes. A passage of stiles leads you to the Limbourg road, labelled "Most beautiful villages in Wallonia", where you can stop for a snack before returning to your starting point.

Limbourg: let's walk in the woods
Starting from the he Hors-Les-Portes car park, this walk takes you up the crest of the Halloux hill to an old path, the Voie d'amis, which once linked the village of Hèvremont to the ancient city of Limburg. At the top of this steep path, which is slippery in rainy weather, you can admire the magnificent panorama over the Bovegnée valley and the Gileppe aqueduct. Three small stone steps lead you to the path of the stiles, the gateway to the woods.
The woods of Hèvremont and Goé are part of the vast western Hertogenwald, which was once a fantastic reserve of wood, mainly for the production of charcoal for industry. As early as the 19th century, it was decided to plant spruce trees on a massive scale in order to restore the forest, which had been badly damaged and deforested over the centuries.
In line with this desire to conserve the forest area, the Goé forest is nowadays included in the recognition programme for forest certification systems that guarantee the sustainable and responsible use of the area. Guided by birdsong and the delicacy of the blueberry and wild strawberry bushes, make your way to the peaceful hamlet of La Pierresse before crossing the authentic village of Goé. The twisted bell tower of the Saint-Lambert church shows you the way to the viewpoints of the Halloux hill in a final effort.

Limbourg: a certain sweetness of life
Perfectly suited to occasional walkers, this walk is a concentrate of gentleness and tranquillity. Far from the noisy city life, this walk is a nice way to discover another facet of the rural well-being and the good life of Limburg. Friends of the visitors, let yourself be guided by the stroll through the meadows surrounded by peaceful cows, along the paths scented with elder flowers, in the middle of the arboretum with its proud and slender trees, but also, and here is what is surprising, at the bend of a path crossing the new dolhaint housing estates.
For once, after walking 5 kilometres, you can choose between two routes. Over a distance of 1 km, you can :either discover the authentic village of Goé and its Saint-Lambert church with its twisted bell tower and why not try a treat from the "Simplement bon" pastry shop (9.8km - departure Place Léon d'Andrimont - 4830 Dolhain-Limbourg)or continue in the direction of Vesdray and the local economy with the Corman company, world leader in butter-making know-how or the Carnol sawmill (8.7km - departure from Hors-les-Portes, 4830 Limbourg)
Whatever your choice, it won't be long before you return to the countryside and its enchanting spaces that smell of the desire to relax on a bench you come across at random.

Limbourg: around Hèvremont
The peaceful hamlet of Hèvremont, first mentioned in the 12th century, consists mainly of farms and houses built of limestone and sandstone rubble. This very rural village, crossed by the Bovegnée stream, stretches along vast green expanses surrounded by the oaks and firs of the Hèvremont woods.Every path and track is an invitation to relax and discover this natural environment. Wild flowers and plants, woodland fruit and red-legged frogs are all on offer to those who pay close attention.
The ‘black, yellow and red circles’ walks starting from the Chapelle Saint-François d'Assise are very accessible, even for the youngest walkers, and have very few changes in altitude. Ideal for a short getaway, they invite you to listen, smell and taste all the richness of this landscape. And if you're the owner of an adorable pooch who, like you, loves to run around, we recommend the ‘yellow circle’ walk, as there are no stiles to climb.
Take a break, recharge your batteries and let yourself be overwhelmed by the tranquillity of this splendid village nestling at the foot of the former capital of Limburg.

Limbourg: panorama and beautiful views
Starting from the Place Léon d'Andrimont, in the heart of Dolhain, this walk invites you to gradually leave the hustle and bustle of the town centre and take to the green paths towards some magnificent panoramas.
Following the "blue rectangle" signpost, take the Hadrimont hill by storm, as many soldiers have done before you, and discover a landscape open to the surrounding valleys. In the distance, you will see the villages of Baelen and Goé, whose twisted bell towers rival each other in technical prowess and elegance. This path is also an opportunity to discover old 17th and 18th century limestone farms.
At the highest point of your walk, a small path guides you between the buildings of the Misère farm to reach, in the heart of a small wood with delicate scents, a typical old rocky hollow path. Be careful with your ankles!
This bucolic descent takes you back to the outskirts of Dolhain where the gentle murmur of the Vesdre invites you to return to the old Limburg road at the foot of the eastern rampart from where the imposing choir of Saint-Georges church looks down on you.

Limbourg: between Saint-Roch and Grünhaut
Let yourself be carried away by a sense of calm on the paths and roads to the east of the village of Bilstain. Your first companion is the Chemin de Saint-Roch which, like the pilgrims of yesteryear, takes you to the picturesque chapel dating from 1740 and dedicated to Saint-Roch, the patron saint invoked against diseases.
After a brief passage on the road to the hamlet of Hoyoux, you continue your walk in the direction of the state forest of Grünhaut. Located to the north of the village of Bilstain, on the Welkenraedt plateau, it covers an area of around 100 hectares and is one of the main forest areas of the Pays de Herve. The site is of great interest both from a landscape and biodiversity point of view. In spring, wild lilies of the valley fill the woods with their fragrance and strawberry plants are waiting to be admired. St John's wort, blackthorn and wild rose cohabit with the silent fauna.
Back on the Chemin de la Grappe, you will see a few large buildings reminiscent of the region's history. Easily spotted in the landscape, like a grey mass surrounded by farm buildings, the 17th century keep of the former château de Villers is the first to catch your eye. Further on, the Hayettes farm, a former dependency of the same castle, and finally the Polenterie farm are all examples of the importance of the rural world in our regions. Your walk ends with some striking views of the rocky spur of the former capital of Limburg, dominated for centuries by the bell tower of Saint-Georges church.

Limbourg: country discoveries
Starting from the Place Léon d'Andrimont, the green diamond signpost leads you to a charming, steep path, the Chemin du Loup. Stop for a moment in the middle of your ascent to catch your breath and admire the view of the village of Limbourg peacefully perched on its spur and surrounded by hills. Continue on to the hamlet of Honthem, which rises to 300 metres and whose subsoil was once coveted for its metal deposits.Around you, a postcard landscape stretches as far as the eye can see, with a few wooden benches inviting you to admire it.
The walk takes you to the heart of the village of Baelen, at the foot of the Green Peak path in the former fishpond of the Duke of Limburg. This path is now a protected site for the protection of honey hedges, pollarded willows and many insects.
Now follow the Baelen brook and head for the old 'chemin des Passeurs' which twists and turns until it reaches the farmhouse of 'La Belle Vue', on the border of the former territories of the lordships of Goé and Baelen. On a gentle descent along the ridge line, proud of your new photographs, return to the town atmosphere of friendly Dolhain.

Limbourg: paths and old roads
While the ascent of the Thier de Limbourg takes you to the old western rampart of the sleeping fortress where the view of the Dolhain Viaduct is unrestricted, the old Verviers road plunges you into another adventure at the place called "Broux". Here the Vesdre, a favourite haunt of our heron friends, flows through the Lonhian countryside. The Bois Madame riding school invites you to climb the slope and its schistose soil towards the Comagnes farm and the Sainte-Anne chapel.
On the Halloux ridge, the path offers fantastic views of the Bovegnée valley and the aqueduct, a work of art that recalls the construction of the Gileppe dam. Nature surrounds you and leads you gently towards Mr Peutat's farm, "Goé glaces". You have to wait a little longer for the reward and continue the walk along the tree-lined path and meadows that leads back to the old capital.
Be careful not to miss the signpost! The way to go is a very small path downhill through the wood on your right. Be careful not to fall. This last effort allows you to reach the old Dolhain road which runs alongside the Vesdre and to discover, on the footbridge, the old buildings from the textile era.If you are a good walker and you are not afraid of steep hills, this walk is for you! Following the old connecting roads, which have now become stony and steep paths, this route crosses different landscapes that have been modified for the needs of human history.
