Verviers, the sleeping city – Marie Carlens, Christelle Paignac (only in french)

Verviers was once one of Belgium’s wealthiest towns, at its peak at the end of the 19th century. Today, it is one of Belgium’s poorest towns with a population of over fifty thousand…
When Jean-Jacques Andrien conducted research between 1985 and 1988 to write the screenplay for his film Australia, released in 1989, he was convinced that the vast majority of those involved in the Verviers textile industry had failed to recognise the warning signs of its irreversible decline. His intuition was that they were victims of a denial of reality, a psychological defence mechanism developed by the psychoanalyst Octave Mannoni.
In order to develop this idea, he turned to a psychiatrist and a psychologist-psychoanalyst, who tried to shed some theoretical light on the subject.

Verviers, the Sleeping City – Editions Irezumi

This text was written based on the two-voice conference given by Christelle Paignac, psychologist, and Marie Carlens, psychiatrist, on September 19, 2019. The conference was organized by local associations in the city of Verviers (Maison du Tourisme du Pays de Vesdre, in collaboration with the Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode, and the Museums of Verviers) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the film AUSTRALIA by Jean-Jacques Andrien.

RTBF covered it here: https://www.rtbf.be/article/30e-anniversaire-pour-le-long-metrage-australia-qui-a-marque-la-region-vervietoise-10307560

Verviers, the Sleeping City is presented as a documented narrative. It draws on numerous local research sources as well as psychodynamic and psychoanalytic references. The two authors offer their perspective, without claiming to hold the ultimate truth. Their approach invites the reader to personal reflection and an introspective reading of the city and its history.

Australia has left indelible marks in the memories of Verviers residents and the surrounding region.
