The book Public Civil Heritage of Verviers highlights the architectural richness of the Verviers urban area. Published in the summer of 1996 by the Adolphe Hardy Foundation, based in Dison, it represents an important contribution to the understanding of local heritage. The work carried out by Catherine Bauwens draws attention both to emblematic buildings and to more discreet constructions, often little-known yet remarkable. Monuments, perrons, fountains and statues form a coherent ensemble that conveys the public history of the Verviers region.
Public civil buildings profoundly transformed the city’s appearance. Starting in 1780, with the construction of the Verviers town hall, the city responded to demographic growth by multiplying its buildings. Between this date and the inauguration of the central station in 1930, most public civil buildings were erected. In addition, a remarkable acceleration occurred in 1875-1876, when five schools were built, including the Athénée and the Lycée. At the end of the nineteenth century, a new wave further confirmed this intense development.
The book, Public Civil Heritage of Verviers, covering Verviers, Dison and Pepinster, contains 207 pages and offers a clear, well-documented and accessible reading experience for all those interested in local history.
